Mom, boyfriend charged after kids abused, tortured with hot sauce, Greenville police say
"A mother and her longtime live-in boyfriend were arrested and charged with abuse of two of the mother's children, the Greenville Police Department said.
Robert Earl Kailiala Saladaga, 37, and Sabrina Irene Emerick, 25, were each charged with unlawful neglect of a child and two counts of cruelty to children.
Saladaga is also charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to warrants.
The abuse of the boys, ages 5 and 7, occurred on multiple occasions dating back to at least September 2017, police said. "

Waukegan man fatally beat 4-year-old who spilled juice on video console, prosecutors say
"Prosecutors said this week the state will seek a natural life sentence for a Waukegan man charged with first-degree murder in the apparent beating death of his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter, allegedly triggered by spilled juice.
Johnathan Fair, 19, was indicted on four counts of first-degree murder by a Lake County Grand Jury Wednesday. He is in the custody of the Lake County jail with his bail set at $5 million, according to the Lake County State's Attorney's Office."

DA: Girl made video of dad coaching her to lie about assault
"A terrified 13-year-old girl secretly recorded video of her father coaching her to lie about having been physically assaulted by him — and managed to slip the evidence to prosecutors on the eve of his trial in Pennsylvania, authorities said Tuesday.
The videos show Deyon Taylor, 56, instructing his daughter to deny that he choked her in June and to tell the judge he was merely being stern with her, according to a police affidavit.
At the courthouse, the girl asked to speak to a prosecutor in private and showed the videos to her."

Foster family charged with abusing, starving 3 young kids
"A Pennsylvania foster family beat and starved three young children over a period of six years, even staging a videotaped fight between two of the children in an effort to cover their tracks, police said.
Brenda Parise, 60, and her daughter, Amy Parise, who is turning 33 on Wednesday, were arrested Monday on felony child endangerment charges and other offenses.
According to a police affidavit, the Parises beat the children — who were 6, 3, and 11 months when they were placed in the home in 2011 — with a belt and paddle and withheld food from them. When the children were fed, they were made to eat cross-legged on the floor with a hand behind the back, and were largely given bologna sandwiches and sometimes chicken, authorities said."

Provo couple arrested in water torture of young daughter
"PROVO — Police say a Provo couple used water torture on their 9-year-old daughter as a form of punishment.
Joseph Maseser Mitchell, 29, and Ilaria Catherina Mitchell, 28, were arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail Thursday for investigation of child abuse. Joseph Mitchell was also arrested for investigation of unlawful possession of a bank card.
The investigation began Dec. 3 when Provo police received a report from the Division of Child and Family Services regarding possible abuse, according to a police affidavit filed in 4th District Court. The 9-year-old girl was interviewed on Wednesday.
She said her father and stepmother "have punished her three separate times by putting a towel over her face and pouring water on it," the affidavit states. "The 9-year-old went into detail saying that Joseph and Ilaria would take her to the bathroom and tie her hands behind her back. They would then hold her down in the bathtub and place a towel over her face and pour water on it. The 9-year-old stated that she cannot breathe and it hurts when this happens.""

For almost three decades the Judge Rotenberg Center in Canton, Massachusetts, outside Boston, has been zapping many of its special-needs residents with a custom-designed electric shock machine known as the GED. "A Grand Prairie man was convicted of capital murder in the "savage" beating death of his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter in a case the judge said was the worst he'd ever seen.
Charles Wayne Phifer, 36, received an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole for the March 2016 murder of Leiliana Wright.
Leiliana was beaten with a bamboo switch and belts and thrown against a wall. Her mother, 33-year-old Jeri Quezada, pleaded guilty to felony injury to a child as part of a plea agreement that will lock her behind bars for 50 years.
Quezada will be formally sentenced by the judge Wednesday, and relatives will have the chance to give a victim impact statement at that time to both Quezada and Phifer.

"A child welfare worker saw not one sign of abuse while visiting the Queens home where twin 1-year-olds were savagely beaten two days later — with one killed by her injuries, sources said Friday.

35-year sentence for Crystal Valdez in murder of 4-year-old son
"Judge Stanley Sacks on Wednesday had just handed down a 35-year prison sentence to Crystal Valdez, who had been convicted of murder in the 2011 beating death of her 4-year-old son, Christopher.
Sacks, who presided over the trials of both Valdez and her boyfriend, Cesar Ruiz, called the case one of the worst he'd seen in three decades on the bench, and he was clearly appalled by a final request from the defense.

Woman pleads guilty to killing son for wtting the bed
"RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Pine Ridge Reservation woman accused of beating her 2-year-old son to death after he wet his bed has pleaded guilty.
The Rapid City Journal reports 30-year-old Katrina Shangreaux, of Porcupine, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Kylen Shangreaux in July 2016.
She reached a deal with prosecutors but still could face life in prison. She'll remain jailed until her sentencing, which wasn't immediately scheduled.
Shangreaux's mother and the boy's grandmother, Sonya Dubray, has pleaded not guilty to hindering the investigation.
The boy's father is serving time in federal prison for abuse and neglect of a son with a different woman."

Babysitter, 17, accused of beating 2-year-old boy and leaving him brain dead
" The Buffalo News reported that 2-year-old Ethan Bigham is currently on life support at Women & Children's Hospital. The toddler will remain hooked to the machines until his organs can be donated.
According to the outlet, the little boy's babysitter Devon Vanderwege was arrested and charged with first-degree assault by the Erie County Sheriff's Office. When Bigham is taken off life support, Vanderwege could face homicide or manslaughter-related charges."

"A Michigan man waterboarded his girlfriend's 5–year–old son after the boy accidentally ripped a backpack, police said.
Michael Porter allegedly used belts to restrain the child on the back of a footstool at his Flint home May 12, reports NBC 25.
The 30–year–old then allegedly covered the youngster's face with his underwear and poured water over the fabric to make the boy feel like he was drowning.

"Charlie Bothuell V's workouts, in the morning and evening, included 100 push–ups, 200 sit–ups, 100 jumping jacks, 25 arm curls on each arm with 25–pound weights and thousands of revolutions on an elliptical trainer, the court documents said.
"Charlie V reports having to complete the entire workout 'in under an hour or I would have to do it again,'" a petition filed in juvenile court by a state agency said.
Bouthell told investigator he could not finish the workouts sometimes because he was in pain from being struck on the feet with the PVC pipe, the petition said.
...The petition filed in Wayne County juvenile court said doctors found scars or wounds on his chest and buttocks from the pipe and the boy has said his step–mother verbally and emotionally abused him and punched him."
