Central Ohio day care operator accused of sexually abusing kids gets 30 days in plea deal
"COLUMBUS, Ohio - A day care owner convicted of abusing children will spend 30 days in jail. Kimberly Hignite was operating an unlicensed day care in her Grove City home. When the Sheriff's Office searched the home in May 2018, they say they found 24 children with one adult: Hignite's 71-year-old mother. They say many of the children, between 7 months and 5 years old, were strapped into car seats, left unattended in separate rooms. Monday in court the mothers of five of those children stood to face Hignite and tell her how her crimes impacted their children."

NJ judge says Eagle scout's sex assault of drunk girl is not real rape
"At a house party with about 30 pajama-wearing adolescents drinking alcohol, a 16-year-old boy led a staggering-drunk teenage girl into a hidden corner of the basement and sexually assaulted her while recording it on his phone, prosecutors said. Afterward, investigators said, the boy sent at least seven of his friends a copy of the clip with the caption: "When your first time having sex is rape." Prosecutors, calling the teen's actions "cruel" and "sophisticated and predatory" beyond his age, want him to face justice in adult court. A Family Court judge, however, didn't think what happened to the girl was really rape and said prosecutors should have explained to the humiliated victim that pressing charges would ruin the life of her attacker — an Eagle scout with good grades from an "excellent school." An appellate panel overturned Judge James Troiano's decision."

Why Society Goes Easy on Rapists
"I started compiling a list of sexual assailants who got no prison time almost by accident. Twitter makes it easy: You stumble across a case where a man in Anchorage, Alaska, spent no time behind bars for strangling to unconsciousness a woman he masturbated on. You tweet it. Then you read about the Texas doctor who went free after assaulting a patient while she was sedated. You note similarities. Then you read about the high school girl who reported her rape immediately, to no avail—police never even spoke to the alleged attackers. You tack one story like this onto the other, you thread them, and suddenly you have a string of anecdotes that, without much system or method, seems to describe an America disinclined to punish sexual assault. It's a list that leaves most people who read it terribly angry, including me. "

Four sexual assault victims say Cy Vance spared pervy Columbia doctor jail time due to campaign donations
"For over a year, four women struggled to understand why a demented Columbia University gynecologist was allowed to plead guilty to assaulting only some of them without serving any jail time. Now, following questions about Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr.'s investigations into the Trump SoHo development and Harvey Weinstein, they think they know why: They believe the prosecutor was compromised by campaign donations. "I was under the impression they were going to fight for me and the other victims but they didn't do their part," a 35-year-old victim of the perverted gynecologist said. "

Man who raped 12-year-old awarded joint custody of her child
"A man who raped a 12-year-old has been awarded joint custody of her child despite being convicted of her rape and another sexual assault on a child. The convicted rapist assaulted the girl nine years ago and she subsequently became pregnant. A judge has given Christopher Mirasolo, 27, parenting time and joint legal custody of the eight-year-old boy after a paternity test found he was the father. Since his conviction for the rape in 2008, Mirasolo, from Brown City, Michigan, has been convicted of another child sex assault, for which he served four years in prison."

Former Watertown City School District bus driver sentenced to probation for rape
"WATERTOWN — The former Watertown City School District bus driver who admitted in a plea deal in February to raping a 14-year-old girl was sentenced Thursday in Jefferson County Court. Shane M. Piche, 26, was sentenced by Judge James P. McClusky to 10 years' probation, as expected, and will be registered as a Level 1 sex offender as a result of his guilty plea Feb. 21 to third-degree rape. While the district attorney's office had requested a Level 2 designation, Judge McClusky said because Piche had no prior arrests and there was only one victim in this plea, Level 1 was more appropriate. A Level 1 sex offender is considered to be at low risk of committing the crime again and is not included in online sex offender databases."

How a future Trump Cabinet member gave a serial sex abuser the deal of a lifetime
"The pact required Epstein to plead guilty to two prostitution charges in state court. Epstein and four of his accomplices named in the agreement received immunity from all federal criminal charges. But even more unusual, the deal included wording that granted immunity to "any potential co-conspirators'' who were also involved in Epstein's crimes. These accomplices or participants were not identified in the agreement, leaving it open to interpretation whether it possibly referred to other influential people who were having sex with underage girls at Epstein's various homes or on his plane. As part of the arrangement, Acosta agreed, despite a federal law to the contrary, that the deal would be kept from the victims. As a result, the non-prosecution agreement was sealed until after it was approved by the judge, thereby averting any chance that the girls — or anyone else — might show up in court and try to derail it. He got probation for rape of 15-year-old in Ramsey County. Prosecutors protest, but appeals court OKs sentence.
"A Ramsey County District judge did not abuse his authority when he went against a prosecutor's protests and sentenced a man convicted of repeatedly raping a 15-year-old relative to probation, according to a higher court's findings. The Minnesota Court of Appeals cited the "broad discretion" the law affords district court judges in determining sentences as a key reason it ultimately affirmed the lower court's ruling, according to a recent opinion issued by the court. The finding was a blow to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, which filed an appeal in the case this past summer in hopes of eventually securing a longer sentence for Michael John Hill's sex crime."

"You might as well let him walk free with that kind of time," said Rachelle Palmer, the aunt of 18-year-old victim Alyssa Noceda, after a judge issued the wrist-slap sentence on Thursday. Brian Varela fed Noceda a fatal cocktail of painkillers and raped her as she lay dying from the overdose at a party in the Seattle suburb of Lynnwood in February. State defends no jail time for attacker amid calls for judge's ouster
"Amid public outrage Friday, the Alaska Department of Law backed a controversial no-jail sentence for an Anchorage man who choked a woman until she passed out and then sexually assaulted her. The statement from the state's top prosecutor came in response to public concerns as a movement calling for Anchorage Superior Court Judge Michael Corey's ouster gained momentum. Corey on Wednesday sentenced 34-year-old former air-traffic controller Justin Scott Schneider to no immediate time behind bars after approving a plea deal that dismissed the most serious charge against him — kidnapping — and involved a conviction only on second-degree assault. Sexual assault advocates say the seemingly lenient sentence and the district attorney's lack of diligence including the victim — an Alaska Native woman – highlights a deeply flawed legal system. "

"SULPHUR — In an unusual plea deal, a Spencer man has been sentenced to 15 years on probation after pleading guilty to brutally raping and sodomizing a 13-year-old girl at Falls Creek church camp. Benjamin Lawrence Petty, 36, tied rope around the girl's wrists, raped her and then threatened her with physical harm if she told anyone, according to the criminal charge. He was at the camp as a cook at the time of the 2016 offense. Murray County Assistant District Attorney David Pyle, who negotiated the guilty plea, said Petty is "legally blind" and that was a major factor in his decision not to insist on prison time. Petty was given the suspended sentence by District Judge Wallace Coppedge on Jan. 19 after entering a negotiated guilty plea to first-degree rape, forcible sodomy and rape by instrumentation. All three are felonies."

Outrage after court decides girl, 11, 'consented' to sex with man, 28, who lured her from park
