Change is coming. Slowly, too slowly for those who clearly and seek nothing less than a recoding of our cultural software ... but as inexorable as a melting glacier. Increasingly, people are forced to re-think what's "funny." Remember those morons who thought it would be a cool "spoof" to have someone on radio in a "skit" depicting an ALS victim? Well, you can't insult an athlete in America ... we won't stand for that. But when an athlete blames the underage victim in a notorious gang–rape case, the looming loss of sponsorships forces an instant back–track. We are no longer supporting the lie that only countries which practice "honor rape" have a culture which supports sexual assault. We have our own cultural defects, and more and more people are unwilling to accept the "she was asking for it" defense. Some of those even sit on juries.

Afghan Rape Gang Sentenced to Death
"Kabul (AFP)—An Afghan judge on Sunday sentenced seven men to death for the gang–rape of four women in a case that sparked nationwide outrage and highlighted the violence women face despite reforms since the Taliban era.
The seven men, who stood in the dock dressed in brown traditional clothing, were found guilty of kidnapping and attacking the female members of a group that was driving home to Kabul from a wedding.
President Hamid Karzai on Sunday had called for the men to be hanged. The death sentences were technically handed down for the crime of armed robbery rather than rape.

Rotherham child sexual exploitation: Victims raped, beaten and doused in petrol if they threatened to tell
" When in 2010 five Asian men from Rotherham were jailed for grooming teenage girls for sex, it was regarded as a feather in the cap for South Yorkshire Police and the local social services which had doggedly pursued the prosecution.
Sentencing Adil Hussain, Razwan Razaq, Mohsin Khan, Umar Razaq, and Zafran Ramzan, the judge described them as "dangerous sexual predators" and said Rotherham would be a safer place for youngsters with them off the streets. "

"The scale and brutality of the abuse in Rotherham have shocked a country already shaken by a series of child abuse scandals involving celebrities, public officials, clerics and teachers at expensive private schools. The Rotherham report suggests that it continues unchecked among the most vulnerable in British society."

  • Nazir Afzal: 'There is no religious basis for the abuse in Rotterdam.
"'The legal system is itself guilty of wrongly classifying the victims of abuse as criminals. Even as recently as 2008, legal documents referred to children who were the victims of this kind of abuse as 'child prostitutes', he points out, 'as if somehow what the children were doing was a lifestyle choice'."

Child Porn Sentencing Questioned
"Are federal sentencing guidelines for possessing child pornography too harsh?
Calling the guidelines "draconian," U.S. District Judge James L. Graham has become increasingly vocal in his criticism from the federal bench in Columbus.
"Possessing child porn is vastly different from distributing or producing it," Graham said in an interview last week. "The purveyors or producers of these images deserve the most severe punishment we can give them. My concern is the people who end up possessing it."
Richard Bistline, a Knox County man, is to be in federal court on Wednesday to be sentenced for the third time for child"porn possession. His case thrust Graham into the spotlight in 2010 after the judge sentenced Bistline, of Mount Vernon, to one day in prison, 30 days of home confinement and 10 years of probation. The recommended sentence under federal guidelines was five to six years.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah A. Solove appealed Graham's sentence to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled that the penalty did not reflect the seriousness of the offense. The appeals court ordered Graham to resentence the defendant.
But a defiant Graham again sentenced Bistline to a single day in prison, although he increased the home confinement to three years. Solove again appealed, and the 6th Circuit court again ruled that Graham's sentence was too lenient. The court removed Graham from the case.
Judge George C. Smith is to sentence Bistline on Wednesday.

Why a Village Leader Ordered the Rape of a 14–Year–Old in India
"Last week, a young man from a remote village in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand was accused of sexually assaulting a married woman. To punish him, the village leader reportedly ordered the rape of his 14–year–old sister. The husband of the woman who was allegedly assaulted was told to carry out the rape.
As the woman's husband dragged the girl to a nearby forest, villagers only looked on, her family told The New York Times."

Where Rape Gets a Pass
"Sexual assault is rampant on campus. Time to force colleges to take it seriously... Punishments for perpetrators are notoriously light, and often non–existent. Schools have directed students found responsible for sexual misconduct to write book reports and apology notes. While they have the authority to do so, colleges rarely expel rapists: A Center for Public Integrity report found that disciplinary hearings hardly ever result in suspension, let alone expulsion, despite the fact that most college rapists are usually repeat assailants. (Nine out of ten campus rapes are perpetrated by repeat offenders.)"

Police Officers, Others Gang–Raped, Hanged Teen Sisters in India: Cops
"Villagers found the girls' bodies hanging from the tree Wednesday morning, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police Superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home.
Hundreds of angry villagers stayed next to the tree for the rest of Wednesday, silently protesting alleged police inaction in the case. Indian TV footage showed the villagers sitting under the girls' bodies as they swung in the wind, and preventing authorities from taking them down from the tree until the suspects were arrested."

  • India arrests 3rd suspect in gang–rape, death of teens
"The father who reported the girls missing, Sohan Lal, has demanded a federal investigation. 'I don't expect justice from the state government as state police officers shielded the suspects,' said Lal, a poor farm laborer who refused to accept a payment for 500,000 rupees ($8,500) offered by the state government as financial help. He told reporters Saturday that he would accept no financial assistance until the Central Bureau of Investigation, India's FBI, takes over the case.
Such government payments are common in India when poor families face high–profile calamities, and Lal's unusual refusal — particularly for a man living in desperate poverty — was likely to focus attention on his demands for a federal investigation."
